Research progress in the adjuvant treatment of periodontitis with povidone iodine
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease with dental plaque as the initial factor. To date, the main meth-od in the treatment of periodontitis is mechanical plaque removal. However,in periodontal diseases there are infected sites that are not easily accessible to instruments, and microorganisms from other parts of the oral cavity can re-colonized the periodontal pocket. In addition,if patients have acute infections or are temporarily unable to perform oral hygiene measures after periodontal surgery, the application of local antibacterial drugs can achieve better efficacy.Povidone io-dine(PVP-I),with its extensive antibacterial spectrum, can quickly kill periodontal pathogens and promote wound heal-ing.It is a potential periodontal auxiliary drug with low toxicity and won't cause bacterial drug resistance. This review summarized the researches and current status of povidone iodine in the adjuvant treatment of periodontitis in recent years, aming to provide more reference information for the drug treatment of periodontitis.
