Effect of dietary supplementation of Penthorum chinense Pursh extract on in-flammatory response and hepatoprotective effect in immune-stressed broilers
To investigate the effect of the LPS extract on immune stress in broilers,60 red-finned broilers were divided into a control(Control)group,a lipopolysaccharides(LPS)group and a Penthorum chinense Pursh(PCP)group. The PCP group was treated with 5 g/kg of PCP extract in the basal diet for 35 d.At weeks 2 and 5,5 chickens in each group were randomly selected and blood was collected via the jugular vein.12 h after the last LPS injection,10 chickens in each group were randomly selected and executed by cervical dislocation and the livers were collected. The re-sults showed that PCP significantly reduced serum levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone(ACTH)and corticosterone(CORT)and increased levels of growth hormone(GH);reduced serum levels of gamma interferon(IFN-y),inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS),interleukin-6(IL-6),tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)and tumor necrosis factor-β(TNF-β)and increased serum levels of in-terleukin-10(IL-10);effectively alleviated LPS-induced liver injury and reduced serum and liver levels of alanine aminotransferase(ALT)and aspartate aminotransferase(AST);increased liver levels of glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px),total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC),catalase(CAT)and total superoxide dismutase(T-SOD)levels in the liver. In conclusion, the addition of PCP to the basal diet effectively alleviated LPS-induced liver damage and inflammatory response and alle-viated LPS-induced immune stress. The study provides an effective control protocol for immune stress in broilers and provides a basis for the application of PCP in broiler inflammation-related diseases.
