Abstract

Glanders is a highly contagious zoonosis caused by Burkholderia mallei(B.mallei).It is mainly found in solid ungulates and rarely occurs in humans.Naturally infected human cases have been endemic, mainly among people who have been in contact with infected solid ungulates. In addi-tion,cases have been reported among laboratory workers. The World Organisation for Animal Health(WOAH)has been working towards the global eradication of glanders, which has been e-radicated in North America,Australia and most of Europe through comprehensive surveillance, culling of infected animals and strict import measures. However, the new era with the global move-ment of livestock has led to an increase in cases in other parts of the world, with regional epidemics still occurring in Africa,Asia, the Middle East and South America.Recent outbreaks of glanders in the Middle East and Asia have created the potential for the re-introduction of glanders into epi-demic-free areas. Therefore, glanders is classified as a re-emerging disease that threatens human and animal health again.
