A randomized controlled study on analgesic effect of applying Tongluo Qutong Ointment along meridians and acupoints on patients with lumbar disc herniation
Objective To study the analgesic effect of applying Tongluo Qutong Ointment along meridians and acupoints on patients with lumbar disc herniation. Methods 110 patients with lumbar disc herniation were divided into an observation group and a control group by random number table method, with 55 cases in each group. The observation group was applied with Tongluo Qutong Ointment along meridians and acupoints, and the control group was applied with Tongluo Qutong Ointment at Ashi acupoint. The visual analogue scale(VAS)score before and after treatment and during follow-up,remission efficiency of concomitant symptoms and safety of the two groups were compared. Results Before treatment, there was no significant difference in the VAS score between the observation group[(5.98±1.84)points]and the control group[(6.10±2.20)points](P>0.05).After treatment, the VAS score in the two groups was lower than that before treatment, and the VAS score of(2.93±1.30)points in the observation group was lower than(3.97±2.29)points in the control group(P<0.05).In the observation group, the VAS scores at 2 weeks,1 month and 3 months after treatment were(2.79±1.68),(2.67±1.38)and(2.37±1.95)points,which were lower than those before treatment(P<0.05);and it was slightly lower than that after treatment, but the difference was not significant(P>0.05).In the control group, the VAS scores at 2 weeks,1 month and 3 months after treatment were(3.67±2.54),(4.67±2.63)and(4.59±2.98)points;the VAS score at 2 weeks after treatment was slightly lower than that after treatment, and those at 1 and 3 months after treatment were higher than those after treatment, but the difference was not significant(P>0.05).The VAS scores of the observation group were lower than those of the control group at 2 weeks,1 month and 3 months after treatment(P<0.05).The significant remission efficiency of concomitant symptoms was 94.6%in the observation group, which was higher than 76.4%in the control group(P<0.05).The total remission efficiency of concomitant symptoms in both the observation group and the control group was 98.2%,and the difference was not significant(P>0.05).During the treatment,3 cases of mild skin pruritus occurred in each of the two groups, which was relieved after local application of ointment. There was slight scab in local skin in later stage, and no infection or scar occurred. There were no serious safety problems between the two groups, and the difference in safety was not significant between the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusion The analgesic effect and long-term curative effect of applying Tongluo Qutong Ointment along meridians and acupoints are better than that of conventional Ashi acupoint application for patients with lumbar disc herniation, and the efficiency is higher than that of Ashi acupoint application.
