Epidemiological characteristics of pediatric intussusception before and after the COVID-19 outbreak in Linyi City
Objective To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of pediatric intussusception before and after the COVID-19 outbreak,so as to provide the scientific reference for prevention and treatment intussusception. Methods Medical records of children<14 years of age with intussusception were collected, and annual incidence rates were analyzed retrospectively to compare changes in trends before and after the outbreak. Results A total of 1815 children were included, with 1271 males(70.03%)and 544 females(29.97%),the incidence rates in 2017-2021 were 18.32/100 000,14.96/100 000,12.17/100 000,10.78/100 000,and 12.63/100 000,respectively.The incidence rate was the lowest in 2020,and no seasonal varies, but in 2021,the incidence rate and seasonality recovered. There was a significant difference of the incidence rate before(2017,2018,2019)and during(2020,2021)the COVID-19 outbreak(χ2=11.254,P=0.001<0.05).There was no difference in gender between the two stages(P=0.585>0.05),but the age of children after the COVID-19 outbreak was older than before the COVID-19 outbreak(P<0.001).There was a significant difference of the incidence rate of male patients before and during the outbreak(χ2=10.353,P=0.001<0.05),but no significant difference in female patients(χ2=2.141,P=0.150>0.05).Conclusion Viral infection is one of main causes of pediatric intussusception, and the incidence of pediatric intussusception declined significantly during COVID-19 outbreak, with a marked decline in male children and a different distribution of months from those before outbreak, which may be associated with a decline in other viral infections due to precautionary and control measures such as maintaining a social distance, wearing masks, and hand hygiene.
