The effect of intense pulsed light combined with meibomian gland massage on meibomian gland dysfunction
Objective To explore the clinical effect of intense pulsed light(IPL)combined with meibomian gland massage on meibomian gland dysfunction(MGD).Methods 61 patients with unilateral meibomian gland dysfunction were randomly divided into a conventional group(30 cases)and an intervention group(31 cases)according to principle of voluntary.The conventional group was treated with meibomian gland massage only,and the intervention group was treated with intense pulsed light combined with meibomian gland massage.The ocular surface disease index(OSDI)score,meibomian gland secretion score,tear break-up time(BUT)before and after treatment,and clinical treatment effect were compared between the two groups.Results After 2 and 4 months of treatment,OSDI scores of both groups decreased significantly compared with that before treatment;after 2 and 4 months of treatment,OSDI scores of the intervention group were(17.97±6.01)and(8.18±3.27)points,which were lower than(22.35±7.84)and(11.04±3.66)points of the conventional group(P<0.05).After 2 and 4 months of treatment,the meibomian gland secretion score in both the conventional group and the intervention group decreased compared with that before treatment;the meibomian gland secretion scores were(6.43±1.49)and(1.13±0.87)points in the intervention group,which were lower than(7.22±1.46)and(1.62±0.99)points in the conventional group(P<0.05).After 2 and 4 months of treatment,BUT in both groups was prolonged compared with that before treatment;BUT were(13.02±2.24)and(18.15±2.49)s in the intervention group,which were longer than(9.97±2.08)and(14.92±2.27)s in the conventional group(P<0.05).The total effective rate of the intervention group was 90.32%,which was higher than 70.00%of the conventional group(P<0.05).Conclusion The combined treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction by intense pulsed light and meibomian gland massage has remarkable clinical effect,obvious reduction of symptoms and good improvement of meibomian gland function,which contains high clinical application value.
