Sugarcane is a major sugar crop in China.Continuous development of new variety and their popularization are essential for the sustainable development of cane sugar industry.In the past two decades,aimed at breeding for rain-fed area(nearly 70％of the total sugarcane growing area),and developing new cultivars surpass major cultivars Xintaitang 22 and Xintaitang20 performing low sugar and cane yields,a total of 5962 germplasm has been collected through collection and exchange,and a range of key breeding parental clones such as CP81-1254,GT92-66 and YZ94-343 have been explored or created.In addition,efficient selection technology combined family selection,stress tolerance at early stage,efficient identification of sugar content,and selection for ideotype have been developed and widely used.A range of new sugarcane cultivars such as GT42,GL05136,YZ081609,GT44 and YZ0551 have been developed,and used as the fifth generation of dominant cultivars in China.In future,breeding cultivars for mechanical harvesting will focus on lodging tolerance,good ratooning,high tillering,in addition,development of GM cultivars and continuously popularization of healthy cane setts will be enhanced.
