Autism spectrum disorder(ASD)is a neurodevelopmental disorder in children, and its early diagnosis is crucial for effective intervention treatment.Gestures serve as a significant indicator for early autism screening.Literature review reveals that children with ASD tend to have a lower frequency of gestures, with limited types and functions, and weaker ability to combine these gestures with other modalities of communication such as speech. The development of gestures in children with ASD may deviate from the normal trajectory, but it can,to a certain extent, predict language development. The gesture disorders in children with ASD are mainly related to the deficits in joint attention, motor system, and mirror neuron system.Future research needs to broaden the perspective and pay attention to the use of gestures in Chinese-speaking children with autism.Simultaneously, the establishment of a comprehensive gesture evaluation system for children with ASD should be pursued.Gesture utilization should be strengthened in both family and school environments. Moreover, resources and devices should be used holistically to create environments for children with ASD to use gestures, further improving their language and communication skills.
