Difficulties in Decoding Chinese Character Radicals for Children with Developmental Dyslexia and Its Intervention
Due to the unique structure of Chinese characters, decoding radicals plays a crucial role in children's learning of new and low-frequency characters. However, children with developmental dyslexia in Chinese may incorrectly decode semantic transparency and phonological regularity from radicals unrelated to the whole character's semantics and phonology. When decoding phonetic radicals, they exhibit characteristics such as developmental delay, poor learning outcomes, and overreliance on and over-regularization of rules. When decoding semantic radicals, they are regulated by phonetic radical decoding while actively relying on semantic knowledge to compensate for difficulties in word recognition caused by dependence on phonetic radicals.Insufficient statistical learning ability,visual-verbal associative learning ability, and phonological processing ability may be the underlying reasons for decoding difficulties.Intervention methods mainly include early interventions and training in recognizing radicals, decoding Chinese character structures, and structured reading and writing guidance.Future research should use various methods to further explore the location, properties, degree, and abilities of radical decoding in children with developmental dyslexia in Chinese, reveal the underlying mechanisms of radical decoding difficulties, and thus provide important evidence for developing more targeted and direct intervention strategies and models.
