Deaf group identification can effectively enhance the individual self-esteem of deaf adolescents, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. To verify the relationship between deaf group identification and self-esteem of deaf students, and to explore the mediating role of basic psychological needs,a questionnaire survey was conducted on 551 deaf students in Grade 7-12 from 11 special education secondary schools in Sichuan Province. The results showed that:(1)deaf group identification and self-esteem were positively correlated;(2)the satisfaction of competence needs and relatedness needs partially mediated the relationship between deaf group identification and self-esteem of deaf students. That is,deaf group identification could enhance individual self-esteem by satisfying students'basic psychological needs. Therefore, special education schools should adopt diverse educational approaches to promote deaf group identification and support the fulfillment of basic psychological needs among deaf students, thereby effectively enhancing their self-esteem.
