Visual perspective taking(VPT)is critical for children to overcome self-centeredness,learn to see problems from others'perspectives, and improve social skills. The article reviews cognitive-behavioral,eye-movement,and brain mechanism studies of VPT in individuals with autism spectrum disorders(ASD),and found that no consistent conclusions have been drawn about whether VPT is impaired in individuals with ASD and its relationship to theory of mind(ToM).Compared to typically developing individuals, individuals with ASD show abnormal eye movements and brain mechanisms.Future research should explore the influence of individual characteristics on VPT in individuals with ASD,conduct different types of VPT tasks, reveal the relationship between VPT and ToM and strengthen the research on eye-movement and brain mechanism of VPT in individuals with ASD.
