The research value of the illustrative literature on ritual vessels of the Song Dynasty and the interpretative nature of its illustrations have never been evaluated accurately over the years.Based on the shape and structure of unearthed artifacts,consequent scholars considered the illustrations of ritual vessels are fabricated and its interpretations are unreliable.However,these opinions are unfair.According to the analysis of Xin Ding San Li Tu of Nie Chongyi,the origin of the shape and structure of ritual vessels in the book are mostly reliable.The fundamental reason for the difference between the illustrations of ritual vessels and the unearthed artifacts lies in the essential attribute of"interpreting rituals through illustrations."The core purpose of creating the illustrations of ritual vessels is to interpret the literature of three ritual classics,not to reconstruct the artifacts.Therefore,it is incorrect for later scholars to verify the accuracy of the illustrations of ritual vessels using unearthed artifacts and to judge the quality of the books based on the correctness of their interpretations.
