A Study on Early Translationof Iu-Kiao-Li,A Novel about Gifted Scholars and Beautiful Ladies in the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Western Countries:Versions,History,Value and Translator's Identity
The translation of Iu-Kiao-Li,a typical Chinese romantic novel in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, has great influence in western countries. However, the current research on its translation mainly focuses on the version translated by French scholar and translator Remusat, while lacking attention to other early translations, and the systematic study across versions is even more rarely carried out, leaving a large gap in the research on the early Western translations of this classical novel.Through reviewing the history, this study excavates and researches four historically significant and valuable early translations, presenting a portrait of early translation of Chinese classical novels in the West from four perspectives,i.e.versions,history,value and translator's identity,so as to provide a new perspective for the study of early translation of Chinese classical novels in the west.
