摘要
19世纪,域外学者获取汉文佛典比较困难,关于汉文大藏经的认知也因此极其有限.这种情况在1875年汉文大藏经传入英国之后才有了改观,此部汉文大藏经虽不是西传的第一部,但却产生了重大影响.本研究拟揭示以英国为中心的早期汉文大藏经域外阅读的历史语境、入英路径与本质原因以及影响,发现该过程是文本跨国跨语转换的过程,从中可窥见中、日、英三国之间复杂的文明冲突与交流.英国国家翻译实践所产生的汉文大藏经英文目录之毕尔目录和南条目录,影响广泛而深远,被后世学者批判性接受,促进了汉文佛典域外阅读的进一步发展.
Abstract
The Chinese Tripitaka was introduced to the UK in 1875.Although it is not the first to be transmitted westwards,it has a major scholarly impact.For a long time period before that in the 19th century,overseas Buddhist scholars had difficulty finding Chinese Buddhist texts,thus leading to a very limited cognition on Chinese Tripitaka.This paper aims to reveal the historical context,the transmission route,the essential reason and the influence of the UK-centric early overseas reading of Chinese Tripitaka.A glimpse of the complex clash and communication of civilization among the UK,Japan and China can be caught.The two catalogues resulted from the UK state translation program exerted significant influence and were critically accepted in the international academia of Buddhism,which improved the English catalogue of Chinese Tripitaka and helped the development of overseas reading of Chinese Buddhist texts.
