A Research Review of the Study of Ming and Qing Novels in the ōtani Collection of the Dalian Library
The Dalian Library's Ōtani Collection,deriving from the former collection ofŌtani Kōzui,the patriarch of the Nishi Hongan-ji Temple in Japan,which has been attracting much attention from scholars due to the large number of Ming and Qing novels and the rare editions,and the research results are roughly categorized into several key areas.Initially,it gained attention from the academic community thanks to the extensive surveys and meticulous compilation of editions during the formative stages of these disciplines such as history of Chinese literature in the modern times.In recent years,literary scholars have further organized this collection and made significant progress in the study of many novel editions.Moreover,this collection was deposited and subsequently donated to the Manchukuo Dalian Library by Ōtani Kōzui during the Japanese invasion of China,involving considerable historical details.Lastly,the popular novels in the Ōtani Collection can be traced back to the literary repository of the Nishi Hongan-ji temple's Shaji Dai Bunko in the late Edo period,reflecting the interest of Japanese monks in novel reading at that time.
