The Adventures of a Chinese Giant:A Study on the First English Translation of Water Margin
In 1872,The Adventures of a Chinese Giant in The China Review opened the prelude to the English translation of Water Margin.This paper attempts to explore the identity of the translator in this translation activity,analyze the characteristics and reveal the influence of the translation.It is found that the first English translator of Water Margin is the British diplomat Harry Smith Parkes,and the most remarkable feature of the translation is that there are a lot of rewriting and deletion to conform to the ideological and poetic norms of the readers from English-speaking world.Moreover,with the help of The China Review,the most widely circulated and influential English sinology journal in the western world in the second half of the 19th century,the translation has exerted certain influence.This paper holds that The Adventures of a Chinese Giant should occupy an important position in the history of the English translation of Water Margin.
