Abstract
The English translations of the titles of"Yang Sheng Zhu"(养生主),"De ChongFu"(德充符),"Ying Di Wang"(应帝王)and"Zai You"(在宥)of Zhuangzi are different from the perspectives of Confucianism and Taoism, and the occurrence for this phenomenon stems from the translators'different choices between the ancient Chinese commentaries. The English translation of"Yang Sheng Zhu"distinguishes between nourishment and cultivation, and it also involves the issue of whether to nourish the body or the spirit. The English translation of"De"(德)distinguishes between virtue and inner power. For"Ying Di Wang,"there are two understandings:one emphasizing how an emperor should do and the other advocating that an emperor just responds passively to the world. The English translation of"Zai You"includes three perspectives:tolerance, limitation, and letting it be,and the first two of which take Confucian views.
