Howard Goldblatt's Translation with Deletion and Modification and Its Inspirations for Chinese Culture to Go Global
Howard Goldblatt's translation is notably characterized by the deletion and modification of the original text,which has attracted criticism of betraying the original work.However,this paper argues that appropriate deletion and modification is to offset the exclusion of heterogeneous cultures within the target language context,to make the translated text more acceptable to readers,and to facilitate the in-depth communication and interaction between different cultures.His deletions and modifications mainly focus on culture-loaded words,ideology,background information,vernacular expression,controversial customs and descriptions of bloodiness and violence,which are closely related to his translation motivation and purpose,his own understanding,readers'reception and the pressure of commercial publication.From the perspective of translation efhics,Howard Goldblatt's translation with deletion and modification brings some inspirations for Chinese culture to go global:improving the reception of the translated works is conducive for the culture to go abroad;it is beneficial for western readers to accept the beauty of Chinese literature and culture by properly handling cultural differences,effectively balancing deletion and retention,and displaying the universal value and cultural empathy of the works.
