The Dissemination of Esoteric Buddhism in the Tang and Song Dynasties and the Evolution of Guanyin's Female Image
The important evolutionary period for the feminization of the Chinese Guanyin image occurred approximately from the Middle Tang to the middle of the Northern Song Dynasty, which coincided with the spread of Indian Esoteric Buddhism in mainland China.According to analyses of historical documents and archaeological data, the introduction of esoteric female worship and statue art during the Tang, the Five Dynasties, and the early Song Dynasty significantly influenced the transformation of the female image of Guanyin in the mainland China. The feminization of Guanyin in the Song Dynasty represents a combination of the image of Miaoshan and the compassionate Guanyin with a thousand hands and a thousand eyes. This evolutionary process fully embodies the fusion of Buddhism with traditional Chinese culture and reflects the conscious spirit of Chinese culture.
