In the early 20th century,Richard Wilhelm,a German missionary,was so captivated by Chinese culture that he gave up preaching and turned to translating and publishing Confucian classics such as The Analects of Confucius,Mencius,Yi King,and the Book of Rites into German,becoming a prominent sinologist of his generation.At the same time,Ku Hungming,a Chinese scholar who had studied in the West for many years,translated The Analects of Confucius into English and introduced his works to Germany through Richard Wilhelm.Through their joint efforts,Confucianism attracted attention within the German intellectual community after the First World War,leading to a fundamental change in the Germans'understanding of Confucius and Confucianism.
