Reconstructing The Law of Inner Control:Translating Irving Babbitt's Thought in China and the Cross-Cultural Resonance
The issue of Wu Mi translating Irving Babbitt's humanistic concepts with Confucian core ideas has been a focal point of academic discussion. This paper starts with the inconsistency in Wu Mi's translation of Babbitt's"inner check,"and delves into the historical context using primary sources. It finds that Wu Mi did not simply equate"inner check"with the Confucian idea of inner control but established a more intricate intertextual relationship. The findings offer a new perspective on the cultural exchange between East and West in the 20th century, highlighting the unique path of cultural revival by the"Xueheng School".
