The character"Mao((麋))"appears five times in the Chu bamboo slips of the Warring States period.It should be analyzed as a picto-phonetic character using毛as the component to indicate the pictorial image and 麃 as the component to indicate the pronunciation which is simplified.It is a picto-phonetic character that毛adds the phonetic component麃,which is the variant of the 毛.In the Chu tombs at Angang,Laohekou in Hubei Province,this character should be read as"Mao(毛)"and"Biao(表)",毛represents the general decoration of feathers on a flagpole,while鲁帛之表refers to a sheath made of silk from the state of Lu used to cover bamboo staffs.
