Effect observation of combined abdominal-knee acupuncture on knee osteoarthritis in the elderly
Objective To observe the efficacy of combined abdominal-knee acupuncture on knee osteoarthritis in the elderly. Methods 63 elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomly divided into a combined abdominal-knee treatment group(32 cases)and a conventional acupuncture group(31 cases).Combined abdominal-knee treatment group was treated with combined abdominal-knee acupuncture, while conventional acupuncture group was treated with conventional acupuncture. The faces pain scale-revised(FPS-R)score and Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index(WOMAC)score were compared between the two groups of patients before and after treatment. Results There was no difference in FPS-R score between the combined abdominal-knee treatment group and the conventional acupuncture group before treatment(P>0.05).After treatment, the FPS-R score in both the combined abdominal-knee treatment group and the conventional acupuncture group was lower than that before treatment, and the combined abdominal-knee treatment group had lower FPS-R score of(2.33±1.02)points than(2.98±0.81)points in the conventional acupuncture group(P<0.05).There was no difference in WOMAC scores between the combined abdominal-knee treatment group and the conventional acupuncture group before treatment(P>0.05).After treatment, the WOMAC score in both the combined abdominal-knee treatment group and the conventional acupuncture group was lower than that before treatment, and the combined abdominal-knee treatment group had lower WOMAC score of(29.01±12.09)points than(36.71±13.61)points in the conventional acupuncture group(P<0.05).Conclusion Combined abdominal-knee acupuncture is superior to the conventional acupuncture in relieving pain and improving knee joint function in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis in the elderly.
