Mediating effect of self-control on relationship between procrastination and anxiety in college students
Objective:To explore the prevalence of procrastination and relationship among procrastination,state-trait anxiety and self-control in undergraduates. Methods:A total of 816 freshmen and junior students (436 males and 380 females),whose age ranged from 17 to 25 years old, were assessed with the General Procrastination Scale (GPS,the participant had procrastination behavior if the score of any of items was not less than 4),State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI),and Self-control Scale (SCS).Results:The average score of GPS was (55.0 ± 10.4) and 95.7% of them had different levels of procrastination behavior. The GPS scores were positively correlated with scores of S-AI and T-AI (r =0.34-0.43,Ps < 0.01),and were negatively correlated with SCS total scores and scores of its dimensions (r =0.197 ~ 0.321,Ps < 0.01).Procrastination was predicted by self-control negatively and trait-anxiety positively (β =-0.42,0.24,Ps <0.01),and explained about 28.2% variance.Self-control was a partial mediator (β=0.24,Ps < 0.01) between trait anxiety and procrastination and the intermediary effect ratio was 44.6%.Conclusion:Procrastination may be a common phenomenon in college students. And trait-anxiety not only directly predicts procrastination, but also by the mediating effect of self-control indirectly.
