Facial emotion recognition in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia
Objective:To explore the characteristics of facial emotion recognition function in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia.Methods:Seventy-seven adolescents with autism spectrum disorder(ASD),67 adolescents with schizophrenia, and 68 age-matched typically development(TD)adolescents were re-cruited.All participants completed the facial emotion recognition task. Results:The ASD group had lower scores in the basic facial emotion recognition task than the schizophrenia group and the TD group(Ps<0.05),but the schiz-ophrenia group and the TD group showed no differences in these scores(P>0.05).The ASD group and the schizo-phrenia group showed no differences in the scores of complex facial emotion recognition task(P>0.05),but the scores of the two groups were lower than the TD group(Ps<0.001).Conclusion:Adolescents with autism spec-trum disorder and schizophrenia both have facial emotion recognition deficits, but adolescents with autism spectrum disorder show deficits in the recognition of basic and complex facial emotions, while adolescents with schizophrenia only show deficits in the recognition of complex facial emotions.
