Dual-Cluster Formulas Analysis of Rare-Earth-Based Metallic Glasses and Their Eutectic Compositions
Eutectic formation is closely related to the formation of metallic glass, and there exists structural inheritance between metallic glasses and crystals. This article proposes a detailed process for designing RE-based metallic glasses through a cluster model that links them to eutectic-related alloys.Taking the ideal metal glass dual-cluster model proposed by our research group earlier:[(principal cluster)1+(principal cluster)2](glue atoms)2,4,6 for analysis, the two principal clusters are derived from eutectic-related phases. The screening criteria for principal clusters are based on the definition of dense clusters and space utilization. The cluster with the highest density was then chosen as the principal cluster.Eutectic points and metallic glasses are constructed based on the dual-cluster formulas model.Using the Cu-Y,Al-Ce,and Al-Y systems as examples, the dual-cluster formulas model explains the compositions of metallic glass and eutectic, and the results align with experimental values. Finally,we propose detailed steps for designing rare-earth-based metal glasses utilizing the dual-cluster formulas model.
