Objective This study explored the epidemiological and pathogenetic characteristics of hand, foot and mouth disease(HFMD)in Yancheng City,Xiangshui County, from 2017 to 2022,to provide a foundation for the development of effective prevention and control strategies. Methods A descriptive epidemiological method was used to analyse data on HFMD cases retrieved from China's disease prevention and control information system in 2017-2022.Results Between 2017 and 2022,1 024 HFMD cases were reported, thus indicating an average annual incidence rate of 27.54 per 100 000.The incidence peaked in 2018,and a consistent decrease was observed in 2020-2022.The incidence rates among regions showed statistically significant differences. The 1-year-old age group had the highest incidence,at 977.19 per 100 000 peo-ple.According to pathogenicity testing, the dominant strains varied from year to year, but Coxsackievirus 6(CV-A6)was generally the dominant strain in circulation. Conclusion The HFMD epidemic in Xiangshui County exhibited distinct population and regional characteristics. The consistently dominant epidemic strain was identified as CV-A6.
