Primary dysmenorrhea among adolescents in Jinan City:Current status and influencing factors
Objective This study was aimed at investigating the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea and related influencing factors in junior and senior high school students in Jinan,to provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of dysmenorrhea among adolescent girls.Methods A total of 8 239 valid questionnaires were collected between March and June 2022 in Jinan,through a multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method.The questionnaires included demographic characteristics,menstrual conditions,eating habits during menstruation,and psychological status.SPSS26.0 was used for analysis,chi-square test was used for univariate analysis,and logistic regression was used for multivariate analysis.Results In this survey,8 239 junior high and high school girls,with a mean age of 15.72±1.60 years,age at menarche of 12.57±1.13 years,and prevalence of primary dysmenorrhea of 60.6%(4 993/8 239)were analyzed through multifactorial lo-gistic regression.Sleep quality(OR=4.668,95%CI=3.573-6.099),depression(OR=1.760,95%CI=1.569-1.973),anxiety(OR=1.245,95%CI=1.023-1.514),age(OR=1.691,95%Cl=1.501-1.905),consumption of spicy food during menstruation(OR=1.252,95%CI=1.1 13-1.409),drinking strong tea during menstruation(OR=1.201,95%CI=1.032-1.396),age at men-arche(OR=0.690,95%CI=0.613-0.777),and being the only child or not(OR=0.861,95%CI=0.752-0.986)were indepen-dent influencing factors associated with primary dysmenorrhea.Conclusion The prevalence of dysmenorrhea was high among female junior and senior high school students in Shandong Province.Poor sleep quality,depression,anxiety,age,young age at menarche,and poor dietary habits during menstruation were independent risk factors for primary dysmenor-rhea among female junior and senior high school students.Therefore,greater attention should be paid to mental health and sleep among junior high school girls;moreover,guidance to develop good dietary habits should be provided,to promote the healthier growth of adolescent girls.
