Online investigation of knowledge and behavior regarding drinking water intake among college students in 2022
Objective This study was aimed at understanding college students'knowledge of the relationship be-tween water intake and health, and their water consumption practices in accordance with the newly added guidelines in the Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents(2022).Methods A self-designed online questionnaire was administered through convenience sampling and snowball sampling to investigate 363 students'knowledge, attitudes and behaviors regarding wa-ter intake in 27 provinces and cities. Results A survey was conducted on 363 college students(154 men and 209 women). The rate of knowledge of the Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents was 29.90%among male students and 20.10%among female students, and the difference was statistically significant(x2=4.613,P=0.032).Among participants aware of the Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents,a lower percentage of male students(13.00%)than female students(38.10%)were able to accurately answer the question regarding the number of guidelines for a balanced diet(x2=7.349,P=0.007);65.90%of col-lege students were aware of the recommended water intake of 1 500-1 700 mL.The rate of knowledge of the guidelines was significantly higher among male students(78.30%)than female students(52.40%),and the difference was statistically signifi-cant(x2=6.544,P=0.011).Most students believed that drinking small amounts of water multiple times per day was a more ap-propriate way of water consumption(female:91.90%,male:87.70%),and that plain water or bottled drinking water was the most appropriate daily drinking water(female:95.20%,male:90.90%).College students believed that insufficient water intake was related to constipation, dry skin, kidney stones and other diseases.Only 5.20%of male students and 1.00%of female students believed that insufficient water in-take was not related to the above-mentioned diseases, and the difference was statistically significant(x2=4.396,P=0.036).A total of 85.00%of both female and male students chose plain water(mineral water)as their highest daily drinking water.Par-ticipants indicated that drinking water when they remember and drinking water when they are thirsty were their two main drinking habits.Internet media was the most important means for college students to acquire knowledge regarding water con-sumption.Conclusion College students have insufficient knowledge regarding water consumption, and most of their drink-ing behaviors do not meet the standards recommended in the guidelines. Therefore, science popularization and education must be strengthened.
