Psychological health status of students of border medical colleges during the public emergency relief period
Objective This study examined the mental health status of medical college students in border areas dur-ing the public health emergency relief period,to provide a scientific basis for emotional counseling and interventions for students after sudden public health emergencies. Methods From March to June 2022,a stratified random proportional sampling method was used to investigate the mental health status of 4 221 medical college students in Yunnan Province. An online questionnaire survey was conducted by using QuestionStar to analyze the border medical college students'anxiety, depression, and sleep status during the public emergency relief period.Symptoms of depression were evaluated with the Self Rating Depression Scale(SDS);anxiety symptoms were evaluated with the Self Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS),and sleep quality was evaluated with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI).The x2 test and logistic regression were used to ana-lyze the factors influencing anxiety among the college stu-dents.Results The depression score of on-campus medi-cal students was 37.29±5.45 points,a value significantly lower than the Chinese norm of 41.88±10.57 points(t=-20.107,P<0.001);the sleep quality score was 5.04±2.92 points,a value significantly lower than the Chinese norm of 5.26±2.38 points(t=-2.646,P<0.001);the anxiety score was 43.77±5.43 points,a value significantly higher than the Chi-nese norm of 29.78±5.46 points(t=77.573,P<0.001).Logistic regression analysis indicated that medical students with sleep disorders(OR=0.350,95%CI:0.311-0.392)and male students(OR=0.678,95%CI:0.564-0.814)were more prone to anxiety(all P<0.001).Conclusions Anxiety is the main mental health problem among medical students at frontier medi-cal schools during the public emergency relief period, and the main factor influencing medical students'anxiety is sleep con-dition.Male students were more prone to anxiety in this period;in addition,non-medical students'mental health problems were more apparent.Further targeted mental health education efforts are necessary to improve medical students'mental health resilience.
