Influence of parenting styles on psychotic-like experiences among college students
Objective This study investigated the correlation between parental rearing styles and the prevalence of psychotic experiences among college students,to inform strategies for preventing and managing such experiences. Methods In March 2023,a convenience sampling method was used to conduct an online questionnaire survey among 752 undergraduate students in a named city. The online questionnaire survey used the Parenting Style Questionnaire and the Psychosis Prodro-mal Period Questionnaire to investigate the current status of college students'parenting styles and psychotic experiences, and analyze the effects of parental parenting styles on the college students'psychotic experiences. Results Significant vari-ations were observed in the rejection and emotional warmth dimensions of parenting styles by gender, grade level, student's place of origin, and monthly expenditure(all P<0.05).The overprotection dimension showed variance only across monthly ex-penditure levels(P<0.01).Additionally,differences in item scores, pain scores, and total psychosis prodromal scores were observed with respect to gender, grade level, student's place of origin, and monthly expenses(all P<0.01).Rejection and overprotective parenting styles were identified as risk factors for psychotic experiences among college students(P<0.05),whereas emotionally warm parenting styles emerged as protective factors(P<0.01).Parenting style and academic year(ju-nior or senior)jointly accounted for 53.4%of the occurrence of psychotic experiences. Conclusion In the process of chil-dren's growth, parents should adopt more emotionally warm parenting methods, reduce the use of rejection and over-protec-tive parenting methods, and pay attention to the continuous transformation and improvement of parenting methods, which is conducive to the healthy development of students'physical and mental health.
