Survey of risk factors for myopia occurrence and progression among col-lege students
Objective This study explored the risk factors for various degrees of myopia among college students in Qiqihar City,to provide a reference for preventing myopia progression among college students. Methods A convenience sampling method was used to conduct an online questionnaire survey on 938 students in all grades at three universities in Qiqihar City,China. The rank sum test and multinomial logistic regression analysis were used to explore risk factors for vari-ous degrees of myopia. Results The overall myopia detection rate among college students in this survey was 74.95%.The detection rates for mild myopia, moderate myopia, and severe myopia were 26.01%,42.64%,and 6.29%.respectively.Tak-ing non-myopia as the reference, risk factors for mild myopia included one or both parents having myopia(OR=17.743,95%CI:10.596-29.710)and an irregular diet(OR=1.952,95%CI:1.130-3.373).Risk factors for moderate myopia includ-ed one or both parents having myopia(OR=25.920,95%CI:15.786-42.559),female sex(OR=1.496,95%CI:1.023-2.189),and wearing sunglasses(OR=1.442,95%CI:1.083-1.920).Risk factors for severe myopia included close reading(OR=1.439,95%CI:1.017-2.036),female sex(OR=1.857,95%CI:1.006-3.430),and one or both parents having myopia(OR=21.542,95%CI:10.596-43.795).Conclusions The detection rate of myopia among college students in this survey was high.Differ-ences were observed in factors affecting different degrees of myopia.Heredity was a risk factor for mild, moderate, and severe myopia.College students should be encouraged to strengthen their knowledge of healthy eye use, develop good habits in prop-er eye care, and increase their awareness regarding preventing the progression of myopia.
