Association between physical health and levels of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 in first-year students
Objective This study explored the associations between physical fitness and levels of C-reactive pro-tein(CRP)and interleukin-6(IL-6)among first-year university students. Methods Through intentional sampling,753 first-year students at a university in Anhui Province were investigated with questionnaires, and their physical health test results were obtained.Blood samples were additionally collected to detect the levels of CRP and IL-6,and the relationship between physical fitness and low-grade inflammation was analyzed. Results The total physical fitness was significantly higher among females than males(Z=-3.196,P<0.01).A significant negative association was observed between physical fitness and CRP(β=-0.060,95%CI:-0.090~-0.031).The results did not change in female subgroup, even after stratification by sex(β=-0.109,95%CI:-0.157~-0.062).Conclusions The level of physical fitness among first-year students was nega-tively correlated with CRP.A significant negative association was observed between physical fitness and CRP in the female subgroup.
