The effect of peer attachment on sexual adjustment in high school stu-dents:The chain mediating role of school belonging and self-esteem
Objective To investigate the relationships among peer attachment, school belonging,self-esteem and sexual adaptation in high school students, and to explore the mediating role of school belonging and self-esteem in the rela-tionship between peer attachment and sexual adaptation. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted on 1492 high school students using the Adolescent Peer Attachment Scale, the Sexual Adjustment Scale, the School Belonging Scale and the Self-esteem Scale as measurement tools, with a convenience sampling method. The common method bias, correlation be-tween the two variables and the mediating effect were investigated. Results Peer attachment was positively correlated with sexual adaptation, school belonging and self-esteem(all P<0.01).Sexual adaptation was positively correlated with school be-longing and self-esteem(both P<0.01).There was a positive correlation between school belonging and self-esteem(both P<0.01).School belonging and self-esteem mediated peer attachment and sexual adjustment in a chain(95%CI=[0.007 to 0.018],with a significant mediating effect size of 0.013).Conclusions Peer attachment has a positive predictive effect on sexual adaptation.Peer attachment predicts sexual adaptability in high school students through the mediating role of school belonging and self-esteem,and can also indirectly predict high school students'sexual adaptability through the chain mediat-ing role of school belonging and self-esteem.
