Relationship between body image enhancement motivation and exercise persistence in female college students:A moderated mediating model
Objective To investigate the effect of body image improvement motivation on exercise persistence of female college students, and the mediating role between physical education learning engagement and social needs.Meth-ods A total of 442 female college students from 8 universities in Henan Province and Liaoning Province were surveyed by using the cluster random sampling method, based on the self-developed questionnaire of body image to improve motivation and social needs, and the scale of exercise persistence and physical learning engagement, and the SPSS macro-program PRO-CESS was used to test the mediating role of moderation.Results(1)There was a positive correlation between the four vari-ables of body image improvement motivation, physical learning engagement, social needs, and exercise persistence(P<0.001).(2)Physical education learning investment had a mediating effect on the relationship between body image improve-ment motivation and exercise persistence, and the mediating effect accounted for 68.61%.(3)Social needs could significantly moderate the impact of body image improvement motivation on physical learning engagement(β=0.072,t=2.398,P=0.017)and exercise persistence(β=0.112,t=4.021,P<0.001).Conclusions Body image improvement motivation can not only di-rectly and significantly predict exercise persistence, but also indirectly predict exercise persistence through physical educa-tion learning investment. With the increase or decrease of social needs, the positive predictive ability of body image improve-ment motivation on physical learning engagement and exer-cise persistence also fluctuated.
