Relationships among health-related quality of life,negative emotions,and non-suicidal self-injury of 2 711 junior high school students
Objective This study was aimed at exploring the relationships between health-related quality of life and non-suicidal self-injury of 2 711 junior high school students, and the mediating role of negative emotions,to provide a basis for preventing and intervening in non-suicidal self-injury among junior high school students. Methods In October 2022,2807 students from two junior high schools in Yunnan Province were selected for an online survey through a whole cluster ran-dom sampling method. The survey included students'basic information,health-related quality of life, negative emotions, and non-suicidal self-harm behavior. The rank sum test was used for comparison, the Spearman rank correlation was used for cor-relation analysis, and the mediation effect test was performed with the SPSS macro plug-in Process V3.4.Results Among the 2 711 valid surveys,1 369(50.5%)were from boys, and 1 342(49.5%)were from girls;2 073(76.5%)students were of Han nationality, and 638(23.5%)students belonged to minority ethnic groups;369(13.6%)were only children, whereas 2342(86.4%)were not.A total of 551(20.3%)students had left-behind experience, whereas 2 160(79.7%)did not.More-over,1 065 cases of non-suicidal self-injury were detected(detection rate of 39.3%),among which 481 were in boys(detection rate of 35.1%),and 584 were in girls(detection rate of 43.5%);the difference was statistically significant(x2=41.902,P<0.00l).Junior high school students with differ-ent genders and left-behind experience had significantly dif-fering scores in health-related quality of life, negative emotions, and non-suicidal self-injury(all P<0.01).No significant dif-ferences were observed between Han nationality and minority ethnic groups(P>0.05).The health-related quality of life and negative emotion scores of junior high school students significantly differed according to only child status(P<0.05).No signif-icant difference was observed in the scores of non-suicidal self-injury among junior high school students with or without only child status(P>0.05).Mediating effect analysis indicated that negative emotions had mediating effects on health-related qual-ity of life and non-suicidal self-injury(mediating effect value of-0.335,95%CI=-0.381 to-0.282).Conclusions Girls and students with left-behind experience were at high risk of non-suicidal self-injury,and health-related quality of life and negative emotions were associated with non-suicidal self-injury.Attention should be paid to the physical and mental health, and the emotional status,of junior high school students,to decrease the occurrence of non-suicidal self-injury.
