Has the New Urbanization Comprehensive Pilot Improved the Level of Basic Public Services in Cities?——Empirical Evidence from 201 Prefecture-Level Cities in China
Clarifying the relationship between new urbanization and the level of basic urban public services plays an important role in deepening the understanding of the factors influencing the level of basic urban public services, but the current research on the relationship between the two remains insufficient.Based on the panel data of 201 prefecture-level cities from 2011-2019,this paper empirically examines the role of China's new urbanization policy pilots in promoting the level of basic urban public services and their mechanisms by adopting a multi-temporal DID econometric model based on the characteristics of the policy pilots. The study finds that:the new urbanization policy pilot is effective and independent of other external factors;the effect of the policy pilot is affected by the mechanisms of land, population and economic urbanization levels;and the effects of policy pilot are more obvious in cities with higher population density. This paper provides new insights for deepening the understanding of how new urbanization affects the level of basic public services in cities.
