Causal associations between different types of sedentary behavior and negative emotions:A two-sample mendelian randomization analysis
Objective To explore the causal relationship between sedentary behaviors(television watch-ing,computer use,and driving)of different types(active and passive)and negative emotional states(depression, loneliness and worry/anxiety),so as to address emotional health issues associated with sedentary behavior. Methods Based on the correlation types of sedentary behavior and negative emotion in the published genome-wide association studies(GWAS),the instrumental variables were extracted, and inverse variance weighted was used as the main Mendelian randomization analysis method. The sta-bility and reliability of the results were tested using sensitivity analysis, heterogeneity test, and horizon-tal gene pleiotropy. Results Watching TV increased the incidence of depression and loneliness[0R=1.08,95%CI(1.04,1.12),P=3.52×10-5;OR=1.18,95%CI(1.1,1.25),P=1.83×10-7],while driving re-duced that of depression and worry/anxiety[OR=0.88,95%CI(0.80,0.97),P=0.01;OR=0.76,95%CI(0.70,0.83),P=1.34 ×10-10].Moreover,computer use lowered the incidence of worry/anxiety[OR=0.95,95%CI(0.91,0.99);P=0.02].However,the results of the multivariate MR showed that control-ling of BMI and insomnia,as well as increasing vigorous physical activity and education duration, did not alter the above causal relationships. Conclusion There is a causal association between sedentary be-haviors and negative emotional states.Mentally-passive sedentary behaviors, such as watching TV,in-crease depression and loneliness.However,mentally-active sedentary behaviors, such as computer use relieve anxiety/worry,whereas driving alleviates both depression and anxiety/worry.
