Prospective association between changes in depressive symptoms and cardiometabolic multimorbidity in Chinese middle-aged and elderly population
Objective lo explore the association between the change patterns of depressive symptoms and cardiometabolic multimorbidity in middle-aged and elderly people, and to provide evidence for the early prevention of cardiometabolic multimorbidity. Methods Using the data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study,a total of 10 027 subjects were included in the present study. The subjects were divided into four groups based on the changes in depressive symptoms from 2011 to 2013:persistently without depressive symptoms group, depressive symptom remission group, newly developed depressive symptom group, and persistently depressive symptom group, followed up until 2018.Multivariate logistic regression models were used to analyze the relationship between different groups and cardiometabolic multimorbidity. Results Among the 10 027 included participants, after adjusting for various covariates, the risk of cardiometabolic multimorbidity increased in the newly developed depressive symptoms group(OR=1.29,95%CI:1.02-1.66)and persistently depressive symptom group(OR=1.61,95%CI:1.31-1.98),respectively,compared with the persistently without depressive symptoms group. However, the risk of cardiometabolic multimorbidity in the remission of depressive symptoms group(OR=1.16,95%CI:0.92-1.45)was not statistically significant. Conclusions New-onsct and persistent depressive symptoms significantly increased the risk of cardiometabolic multimorbidity among middle-aged and elderly individuals, whereas there is no increased risk for those who have experienced remission of depressive symptoms.
