Interpretation of the"World Obesity Atlas 2024"and insights for relevant initiatives in China
The prevalence of obesity has become a significant challenge for global and Chinese public health.The World Obesity Federation(WOF)released the World Obesity Atlas 2024 during the World Obesity Day(WOD)carnival,offering the latest data and trends on global overweight and obesity,and advocating for interdepartmental collaboration to address the issue of obesity.This paper provides an overview and interpretation of the Atlas.It highlights the high and increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity worldwide,its rapid spread to low-and middle-income countries,the emerging rising trend among children and adolescents,and the close connection between obesity and non-communicable diseases.This paper also discussed the implications of the Atlas and WOD activities on obesity prevention and control efforts in China,incorporating the latest findings from studies in China.Intensive efforts are needed in China to tackle the obesity challenge by developing guidelines and expert consensus,promoting WOD activities,enhancing multisectoral collaboration and international cooperation,etc.These efforts are crucial for advancing global obesity prevention and control,achieving the Healthy China national goals,and fostering a global community with shared health and prosperity.
