Analysis of the usage status and key exposure parameters of common residual cosmetics among women in Shanghai
Objective To investigate the usage and habits of common residual cosmetics among women in Shanghai and to provide key exposure parameters such as per-use amount and daily usage amount for the safety assessment of cosmetics in China. Methods From August to December 2021,female cosmetic consumers in Shanghai were selected to conduct a questionnaire survey. Then, the usage of 6 types of products, including toner, essence, lotion, moisturizer, eye cream, and sunscreen, was recorded during the 14-day survey period. The total use of different products was obtained by differential weighing. Results A total of 309 samples were included in this study. The 90th percentile(P90)of the average amount applied per day and per application of each product were 2.47 g and 1.61 g for toner,0.84 g and 0.69 g for essence,1.57 g and 1.03 g for lotion,0.89 g and 0.80 g for moisturizer,0.23 g and 0.21 g for eye cream,0.68 g and 0.97 g for sunscreen.Among the survey objects, the average daily usage frequency of different categories of products had statistical significance(H=237.42,P<0.05).The average number of uses of toner was higher in those aged 45 years old or above compared with those aged<45 years old(Z=3.29,P<0.05),and the former also had a higher average amount of essence applied per day(Z=2.99,P<0.05),and a higher daily usage frequency of essence(Z=3.55,P<0.05).Conclusions The per-use and daily usage amount of cosmetics among women in Shanghai differ from those of foreign populations. It is recommended to refer to exposure data from the local population to improve the accuracy of cosmetic safety assessment.
