Changes in body shape and physical health of adolescents before and after COVID-19 infection:a cross-lagged analysis
Objective To explore the changes in body shape and physical health levels of adolescents before and after COVID-19 infection and their interrelationships in order to provide a reference for promoting the sustainable improvement of the health levels of adolescents. Methods Based on the Youth Physical Health Monitoring Proj-ect in Jinan,a convenient sampling method was used to select 1 194 primary school students in Jinan,Shandong Province as longitudinal tracking survey samples.Data were collected longitudinally in November 2019(T1),No-vember 2020(T2),November 2021(T3),and November 2022(T4)to analyze the changes in BMI-Z scores and comprehensive physical health scores of adolescents before and after coronavirus infection. Results The BMI Z score of adolescents in 2020 showed a significant improvement compared with that in 2019 and then decreased in 2021 and 2022,with statistical significance(F=2.934,P<0.05).The comprehensive physical and health scores of adolescents showed a decrease in 2020 and rebounded and improved in 2021 and 2022,also showing statistical significance(F=35.737,P<0.01).The cross-lagged model body shape and physical health level were con-structed,and it was revealed significant effects of body shape at T1 on physical health at T2(βT1-T2=0.323,P<0.01),T2 on T3(βT2-T3=0.300,P<0.01),and T3 on T4(βT3-T4=0.283,P<0.01).Conclusions COVID-19 infection specifically impacted the body shape and physical health level of adolescents, and targeted efforts are still needed to strengthen the prevention and intervention of overweight and obesity in adolescents.
