Awareness and screening practices for cervical and breast cancer and influencing factors among healthcare workers of maternal and child health care hospitals in Ordos
Objective To assess the knowledge level and screening behaviours regarding cervical and breast can-cer among healthcare workers(HCWs)at maternal and child health hospitals in Ordos and to explore the potential factors influencing their participation in cervical and breast cancer screening. Methods From June 14 to July 11,2023,a convenience sampling method was used to survey healthcare workers from maternal and child health hos-pitals across nine districts in Ordos City.Questionnaires were administered on demographics, knowledge of cervi-cal and breast cancers, and screening participation. Results A total of 764 valid questionnaires were collected. The average cervical cancer knowledge score was(9.70±2.11),while the average breast cancer knowledge score was(7.43±3.09).According to the logistic analysis, the positive influencing factors of cervical cancer knowledge level included females(OR=1.60,95%CI:1.01-2.53),residents in urban areas(OR=1.98,95%CI:1.23-3.19),and received health education(OR=2.28,95%CI:1.51-3.45).Positive influences on the level of breast cancer knowledge included receiving health education(OR=1.90,95%CI:1.29-2.81).Among 615 female HCWs,235(38.21%)had undergone cervical cancer screening,159(25.85%)were screened for breast cancer, and 137(22.28%)had been screened for both cancers.Promoters of receiving cervical cancer screen-ing included high cervical cancer knowledge(OR=2.51,95%CI:1.53-4.11),being aged 35-<51 years(OR=2.14,95%CI:1.09-4.21),being married(OR=5.85,95%CI:2.46-13.93),worked for 11-<21 years(OR=3.00,95%CI:1.23-7.34),worked for ≥ 21 years(OR=4.97,95%CI:1.70-14.57),being cervical cancer screening workers(OR=3.74,95%CI:1.75-8.02),and received health education(OR=2.97,95%CI:1.47-6.03).Promoters of breast cancer screening included:high level of breast cancer knowledge(OR=1.80,95%CI:1.13-2.89),being aged 35-<51 years(OR=2.93,95%CI:1.36-6.34),being married(OR=2.76,95%CI:1.11-6.86),having ≥21 years of working experience(OR=3.68,95%CI:1.13-12.03),and having received health education(OR=6.30,95%CI:2.34-17.02).All the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusions The knowledge level of health workers regarding the cervical and breast cancer is related to gen-der,ethnicity,work characteristics, and health education factors.Screening behavior is associated with age, marital status, years of work experience, education level, and health education factors related to the cervical and breast cancer.Relevant departments should enhance health education and awareness campaigns for HCWs,en-couraging female healthcare professionals to prioritize their health and actively participate in cervical and breast cancer screening.
