Septic cardiomyopathy (SCM) is an acute syndrome of non-ischemic myocardial dysfunction associated with sepsis, with systolic and/or diastolic left ventricular dysfunction and/or right ventricular dysfunction. Myocardial apoptosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and sympathetic overactivation can lead to myocardial dysfunction, ventricular dilation and cardiac function deterioration. The clinical manifestations of SCM patients lack specificity. Echocardiography is the most valuable examination for bedside assessment of cardiac function, and the detection of left and/or right ventricular dysfunction depends on the echocardiography evaluation methods and diagnostic criteria. At the same time,it is necessary to diagnose SCM comprehensively by means of MRI,invasive detection, and myocardial markers etc. Management and treatment of SCM patients include fluid resuscitation, use of vasopressors, cardiopulmonary bypass support, and monitoring. The prognosis of SCM is not very clear, which may be related to the underlying medical history, the severity of infection, and the time of resuscitation. This article reviews the characteristics, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of septic cardiomyopathy.
