Acute Toxicity of Volatile Oil from Alpinia katsumadai Hayata in Mice
Objective: To observe the acute toxicity of volatile oil from Alpinia katsumadai Hayata in mice and evaluate its safety. Method: Different doses of volatile oil from Alpinia katsumadai Hayata were given to the mice by intragastric administration and intrap-eritoneal injection. The movement and toxic symptoms were observed, and the number of dead mice was recorded. LD50 was calculated by Bliss. Result: Slowly action, abnormal walking, accelerated heart rate, breathlessness and consecutive convulsion were the main acute toxic symptoms and signs caused by volatile oil from Alpinia katsumadai Hayata. The LDjq of intragastric administration was 237. 8 g ? kg-1·d-1 with 95% confidence interval of 277. 9-203.4 g·kg-1·d-1.The LD50 of intraperitoneal injection was 157.9 g·kg-1·d-1 with 95% confidence interval of 176. 9-140. 9 g·kg-1 ·d-1. Conclusion: Volatile oil from Alpinia katsumadai Hayata is safe for clinical administration due to its low toxicity.
