Asparagus filicinus was a traditional Chinese medicine, with the effects of moisturizing lungs, drying dampness and killing insects. To date, about 59 chemical components were identified in the tuberous roots of this species, including steroid saponins, ecdysone, lignans, phenolic acids, organic acids and amino acids.Steroid saponins were the main components.Modern pharmacological studies showed that A.filicinus was with various pharmacological activities, such as antitumor,antitus-sive,anti-inflammatory and bacteriostatic.Clinically,A.filicinus was used to treat pneumonia,bron-chitis,tuberculosis,scabies,lung cancer and other diseases.Pharmacological studies were carried out by in vitro activity experiments, and further validation would be needed in clinical trials. In this re-view,chemical components, pharmacological action and other aspects of A.filicinus were outlined,as well as some identification characteristics.Morphological and anatomical structure characteristics of A.filicinus were compared with closely related A.cochinchinensis to provide valuable information for fur-ther development and clinical application of A.filicinus.
