Within the Asteraceae family of plants, the genus Atractylodes was an important medicinal plant genus. The genus had a wide variety of species morphologies, and its interspecies and subspecies classifications were unclear. Therefore,it was important to clarify the systematic classification,inter-specific and genetic relationships of members of Atractylodes for the development and utilization of the medicinal resources within the genus. This study provided a brief overview of the findings from system-atic classification, plant morphology, cytology, phytochemical classification, molecular system, and other areas of the Atractylodes genus classification research. It compared the differences in the classifi-cation of the Atractylodes genus among different scholars, explored and summarized the classification, identification, and interspecific relationships of the genus. The continuous changes of plant morpholo-gy in Atractylodes were the fundamental reason for the divergence in plant morphology classification. The classification of plant systems within the genus should fully integrate multidisciplinary or technical methods, and consider the sustainability of resource utilization. This paper combined the medicinal quality and clinical use of medicinal plants within the genus Atractylodes to propose prospects for the classification research of Atractylodes plants,in order to provide reference for the protection and utili-zation of Atractylodes medicinal plant resources.
