Objective:To examine and assess the quality of Paris polyphylla herbs cultivated in Fujian. Methods:After field surveys and sample collection, the levels of saponins Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅵ and Ⅶ in P. poly-phylla were determined using high performance liquid chromatography. Results:P. polyphylla predomi-nantly contains saponin Ⅶ,supplemented by saponin Ⅰ,Ⅱ and Ⅵ. Among the seven production ar-eas,the highest content of active ingredients was observed in plants grown in Yushan Township,Ji-anou County, and the lowest in Caixi Township,Xiangyou County, with a pass rate of 71.43%. The variation in total accumulated active ingredients in P. polyphylla rhizome aged 3 to 8 years ranged from 1.038-24.035 g,with the maximum accumulation observed in 8-year-old plants. Based on these find-ings,the optimal harvesting age for P. polyphylla cultivated in Fujian appears to be 8 years. The active ingredient content of growth section in the current year was 1.47 times and 1.83 times of last year and previous years respectively, with the latter falling below the pharmacopoeial limit. The relationship be-tween active ingredient content and specification grade was not fully proportional across different rhi-zome size, indicating that rhizome size alone was insufficient to define the herb's commodity grade. Conclusion:The quality of saponins was influenced by the production areas, growth years, growth zones and rhizome size. Overall, the quality of P. polyphylla produced in Fujian is both favourable and stable.
