The conjunction sui(随)in medieval Chinese Buddhist scriptures and its origin
In Chinese Buddhist scriptures, sui(随)may function as a conditional or unconditional conjunction.Based on Sanskrit-Chinese comparison and comparative studies between different Chinese translations of the same sutra, this paper investigates the origin of conjunction sui and suggests that it is often used to translate yathāor yathā yathā in Sanskrit. The two share similar meanings and sui also copied the function of yathā or yathāyathā as a conjunction before clauses. The expansion of the function of sui is also attested in the translation of Sanskrit relative clauses with yad which further caused its evolution into an unconditional conjunction.
