Buzhebukou(不折不扣),shizu(十足)and their paths of semantic change
In Mandarin Chinese, both buzhebukou(不折不扣)and shizu(十足)convey the speaker's subjective affirmation. The origins of buzhebukou and shizu are closely related to the category of quantity and the two words share the same two paths of semantic evolution:1)quantity>quantity;2)quantity>quality>modality.Metaphor plays a key role in the first path whereas metonymy and cognitive gestalt triggered the change from quantity to quality in the second.Besides, subjectification was an influential factor throughout the second path which laid the foundation for their transition into a modal marker. The category of quality seems to be a significant transition between quantity and modality which requires further studies.
